Do you consider yourself creative? And, if so, do you give yourself permission to create?
If you’re like many of us, creativity takes a backseat to ‘more sensible’ activities: tasks that have a clear timeline, a proven track-record and a measurable output.
But when you suppress your creativity, you dampen your energy, you fall out of rhythm with yourself and this manifest as irritability, lethargy, tempestuous relationships and a general dissatisfaction with life. And this happens because creativity is essential to your wellbeing.
You’re born with the capacity to create, so if you’re not perhaps somewhere along the line you received the message that it's for a select few or that it’s self-indulgent. The thing is: this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Creativity embraces diversity. It comes from a place of generosity. Of open-heartedness. It’s inspired by a belief in something greater than yourself and a yearning to share your insights with the world.
Where would art and science (and humanity!) be without the creativity and courage of individuals like Jane Austen, Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, Bill Gates, Simon de Beauvoir? So, next time you have a full-blown urge to create something or perhaps just the tiniest inkling of an idea why not give yourself time and space to explore it? Because when you care enough about something to contribute creatively to it, you start a positive ripple effect in your life and the lives of those around you.
It’s worth asking yourself: What do you care enough about to contribute your creativity to?
